The Best Time to Visit the Maldives: A Month-by-Month Guide

The Maldives sits just north of the equator, which means it has a tropical climate year-round — warm, humid, and beautiful even in the "wet" season. But the two seasons are genuinely different, and the right time to visit depends on what you're optimizing for.

Here's the complete breakdown, month by month.

The northeast monsoon brings dry, sunny weather, calm seas, and excellent visibility for diving and snorkeling. This is peak season — the most reliable weather, the highest prices, and the most visitors.

Best for: First-time visitors, honeymooners, and anyone who wants the most predictable weather guarantee.

The southwest monsoon brings more cloud cover, occasional rain, and rougher seas on the western sides of atolls. But "wet season" in the Maldives is relative — you'll still have long stretches of sunshine, and the rain typically comes in short, intense bursts rather than all-day drizzle.

Best for: Budget-conscious travelers, repeat visitors, and anyone specifically interested in manta rays or whale sharks.

Peak of the dry season. Exceptional weather, calm seas, and the best underwater visibility of the year. The most popular month for honeymooners and first-time visitors. Book 9–12 months in advance for the best room selection.

Marine life: Reef sharks, rays, sea turtles, and abundant reef fish. Whale sharks possible in the South Ari Atoll.

Equally excellent weather. Slightly less crowded than January. Still peak pricing.

Marine life: Same as January. Whale shark sightings increase in the South Ari Atoll.

The last full month of peak dry season. Weather remains outstanding. Some resorts begin to offer early-booking discounts for the following season.

Marine life: Whale sharks peak in the South Ari Atoll. Hammerhead sharks visible at certain dive sites.

Transitional month — still largely dry but with increasing cloud cover toward the end of the month. Prices begin to soften. An excellent value window for guests with flexibility.

Marine life: Whale sharks still active. Manta rays begin to appear in the Baa Atoll.

The wet season begins. More cloud cover and occasional rain, but still very pleasant. Prices drop significantly — often 20–40% below peak rates.

Marine life: Manta ray season begins in the Baa Atoll (UNESCO Biosphere Reserve). This is one of the most extraordinary wildlife experiences in the world.

Wetter and windier, particularly on the western sides of atolls. Eastern-facing resorts fare better. Good value pricing.

Marine life: Manta rays active in the Baa Atoll. Whale sharks appear in the North Malé Atoll.

Similar to June. The Baa Atoll's Hanifaru Bay reaches peak manta ray aggregation — sometimes hundreds of mantas feeding in a single bay. One of the most remarkable wildlife spectacles on earth.

Marine life: Peak manta ray season. Whale sharks in the North Malé Atoll.

Wet season continues but often with long sunny spells. Hanifaru Bay manta aggregations remain extraordinary.

Marine life: Manta rays and whale sharks both active. Excellent diving visibility on eastern-facing reefs.

Still wet season, but conditions begin to improve. Good value pricing. Less crowded than peak season.

Marine life: Manta rays tapering off in the Baa Atoll. Whale sharks still active.

The transition back to dry season. Weather improves significantly through the month. Prices remain below peak. An underrated time to visit.

Marine life: Whale sharks active. Reef conditions improving as visibility increases.

Dry season returns. Excellent weather, improving visibility, and prices that haven't yet reached January peaks. One of the best value months for quality weather.

Marine life: Reef sharks, rays, and turtles. The full reef ecosystem at its most active.

Peak season resumes. Christmas and New Year's weeks are the most expensive and most booked period of the year — some resorts require minimum stays of 5–7 nights over the holidays.

Marine life: Excellent conditions across all atolls.

The Maldives spans 26 atolls, and weather conditions vary across them. During the wet season, eastern-facing atolls (North Malé, South Malé) tend to have better conditions than western-facing ones. The Baa Atoll is exceptional for marine life but can be rougher in the wet season.
